Brother Tom Martin with his Santa Hat on, and his New Year's Hat on. Happy New Year Brother Tom!,,*** I just received this..awesome, it was in the Seattle PI today.
For those shellshocked by flying during the holidays, consider Tom Martin.
Eight or even 10 times a day, he unties and takes off his shoes to get past the screeners at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. And pushing around passengers in wheelchairs 4 1/2 hours a day -- all the way during one trip this week from the Continental check-in counter to the last gate on the concourse, A3 -- might wipe a smile off a lot of faces. But in the scheme of things, he doesn't seem to mind. A lot has been written about how security, post-9/11, has increased the stress of flying. And few people were smiling one day last week as they stood in long lines, shoes in hand, the minutes ticking away. Then there's Martin, 55, who helps a little. "Nice shirt," says a girl of about 8, who did smile. It really wasn't so much the shirt; it was the lights he wore like a walking Christmas tree, the tie with Bambi and Pinocchio, the Santa hat. And the flashing light on his cane. Certainly just for Christmas? "Nah, I put that on a while ago," he says. He carries the cane because he has trouble walking, and the irony of pushing people in wheelchairs for eight years isn't lost on him. "A lot of people see my cane and say, 'Looks like I should be pushing you around,'" he says. See, up until 10 years ago, Martin was a salesman, going door to door to businesses in Oklahoma selling IBM computers. He remembers nothing about the crash outside Norman, Okla., but doctors told him his truck collided with a car, then crossed the center line, was hit again, and rolled over. His seat belt broke and he was ejected out the rear window, suffering a brain injury. But he seems fine, other than a few things. He says he has trouble remembering things, when asked for his favorite memories at the airport. He has double vision, which makes it difficult for him to keep his balance when walking. He's OK, though, as long as he uses his cane, or leans on the wheelchairs he pushes. He can't drive. So he takes the bus an hour and a half each morning from Enumclaw, and doesn't use one of those carts to take people around. And he can't surf anymore, he laments. Pushing wheelchairs at the airport is a little bit like being a server in a restaurant. Most who push the chairs at the airport work for tips to supplement their minimum wage. But when people want to tip, it's Martin who hands them a small card. "I don't accept tips," it says. "I'm disabled and get $'s from Social Security. ... So Society is taking good care of me. I don't have to join a Gym to get exercise, or go to a Dr. for Therapy. Have a nice Day. I do. Always. Tom Martin." There are just worse things, he says, than having to take your shoes off. Even eight or 10 times a day. WAy to go Brother Tom...we are proud of you!! *he also donated T-shirts to our church here in Texas..No God, Know Fear- Know God, No fear..he is awesome and it shows what one Brother can do!!!
